Protecting yourself from identity theft is free and relatively easy.
You don’t have to pay anyone to monitor your credit.
What you do have to do, is go to the ONLY FREE website to check your credit. It’s www.annualcreditreport.com.
You are entitled to one free credit report a year from each company. That means you actually get three a year. You should space them out every four months so you can monitor your credit all year round.

Is there actually a place to get a free online credit report?
There are places out there that offer it yes, but you have to sign an agreement in order to access something you have a right to. Any places that my be fee based and affordable? Or is it really free without agreement somewhere?

I believe www.annualcreditreport.com gives you one free one per year. You can also get one through Experian, TransUnion or Equifax once a year with no cost.

This is the official site and they will never try to sell you anything at a later time.
You can get all three reports once a year for free. A credit card is not required unless you want to get your credit score.
There are other sites that advertise free credit reports and scores but you must sign up for their service. Nothing is sold here except a credit score if desired.
